The Unlikely Disciple?

I just read a fascinating book "The Unlikely Disciple" by Kevin Roose.  Kevin was a student at Brown University and took a semester to study at Jerry Falwell's Liberty University. I can't pretend to give a thorough review and critique of the book but I did enjoy reading it on a flight from Africa to the U.S.A.
I found that I agreed with much of his critique and criticism of evangelicalism based on my own evangelical background yet found that in someways he missed what Christianity is all about.  Some of it could be Liberty's educational misfires and some of it could be his own lack of relationship with the living God.  He talked a lot about the emphasis on getting "saved" through out the book but I can't recall an instance when that meant a living, two way relationship with an all loving, all powerful God.  And that's what Christianity is all about, a relationship with a holy God brought about through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.  Purity and  righteous living is really nothing outside of a relationship with God.  It's impossible to achieve and even if a person is able to even have a semblance of living that way, it's most likely self-centered, works based and judgmental. Out side of an intimate relationship with God there is little reason to live the morality described in the Bible.
I recommend reading the book for several reasons.  One, whether you are Christian or not it gives you something to think about regarding Christian and non-Christian worlds.  Two, it is a great place to get material for talking to someone outside of your world.  I know a young lady from my church who is reading it and discussing it with someone outside of the faith.  Three, you just might laugh or cry or both.
